Carnatic ("we", "our", or "us") is a mobile application that helps users discover Carnatic classical music through curated YouTube videos. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, how we share it, and your choices.
You can use the Carnatic app without creating an account. An account is optional and only needed for personalised recommendations and saved playlists.
By using this App you also agree to our Terms of Use.
1. Account information (optional)
If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address from Google. We store this to identify your account and personalise your experience. We do not receive your Google password.
2. Watch history (signed-in users only)
We store which videos you have watched and approximate watch duration so we can surface relevant recommendations. This data is stored securely in our database and is never sold or shared with third parties for advertising.
3. Liked videos (signed-in users only)
We store which videos you have liked so you can revisit them. This data is tied to your account and is not shared with third parties.
4. Search queries
We store anonymised search queries (stripped of any personally identifiable information) to improve search quality. Queries are not linked to individual user accounts.
5. Usage analytics
We collect anonymised app usage data (screens visited, feature usage) to improve the product. This data is aggregated and not linked to your identity.
The App stores the following information directly on your device:
We do not use browser cookies (the App is a native mobile application). The local storage mechanisms used (AsyncStorage) are functionally equivalent and serve the same session-persistence purpose. You can clear this data at any time by signing out of the App or uninstalling it.
By using this app, you also agree to Google's Privacy Policy and the YouTube Terms of Service.
We cache basic video metadata (title, thumbnail URL, view count, duration) in our database to reduce API calls and improve performance. We do not store video content itself — all playback happens through YouTube's embedded player.
YouTube statistics (view counts, etc.) cached in our database are refreshed at least every 30 days in accordance with YouTube API Services Developer Policies (Section III.E.4). Statistics that cannot be refreshed within 30 days are removed from our cache. We do not display or store YouTube statistics for longer than 30 days without refreshing them.
You can revoke our App's access to YouTube API data via Google Security Settings .
We do not use YouTube API data to build user profiles for advertising purposes.

The Carnatic app is designed for music students of all ages, including children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. Users under 13 are encouraged to use the app without signing in — all core features (browse, search, playback) work without an account.
If you believe we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately at the email below and we will delete it promptly.

Your data is stored on Supabase (hosted on AWS), which provides encryption at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2+). We use Row-Level Security (RLS) policies to ensure users can only access their own data. We follow industry-standard security practices and review our security posture regularly.
